Short answer…no.
Long answer…only if you overload your stove or burn wet tamarack (which is the same as any wood)
Some of my customers have asked since tamarack burns so hot will it burn out their stove?
It is possible to overload and overheat the stove (as with any wood), and softwood like tamarack (tamarack is softwood in the sense that it is a conifer (has cones), but not particularly ‘soft’ as in low density) with tamarack which make overfires a little more likely because they tend to burn hot when they are good and dry. Just watch the stove until you are used to burning tamarack and you’ll be fine. Over 550 customers in southern MB have burnt tamarack from Firewood Manitoba over the past 7 years and continue to burn tamarack.
An added bebefit of tamarack is that it leaves very little ash after burning so you don’t have to clean out your stive or fireplace as often compared to other types of firewood.
Regarding tamarack creating more creosote than other firewood, seasoned (dry) tamarack firewood does NOT creosote a chimney more than any other seasoned (dry) firewood. That is pure MYTH. I have been burning seasoned (dry) tamarack for over 7 years with no problems whatsoever. I clean my chimney once a year and get a minimal amount of soot and dry ash. I also burn oak, ash, birch, poplar, maple, fir and spruce.
It’s when you start burning WET (green) unseasoned wood of any species is what causes sticky black drippy creosote.
Just remember firewood MUST be dried (seasoned) for several months if you want good results from your woodstove or fireplace.
As always, we have free samples of tamarack available for people that haven’t tried tamarack before…just email or call for a sample.
Thanks for your time and Merry Christmas!
